What is Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behaviour. It is called a 'spectrum' because each autistic child has a unique profile — some children are highly verbal with subtle social differences, others are non-speaking and benefit from AAC. With the right intervention, every autistic child can make meaningful progress.
Signs to Watch For
- Limited or no eye contact by 6–9 months
- Not responding to their name by 12 months
- No babbling, pointing, or waving by 12 months
- No single words by 16 months or two-word phrases by 24 months
- Loss of previously acquired speech or social skills
- Repetitive movements or insistence on sameness
- Unusual sensory responses (covering ears, avoiding textures)
- Difficulty with pretend or social play
How DCCD Helps
At DCCD, autism intervention is always multidisciplinary. Our SLPs target communication — from building first words to navigating complex conversation. Our OTs address sensory regulation, helping children manage their sensory environment so they can engage and learn. We also use DIR Floortime and parent-coaching to ensure progress happens at home, not just in the therapy room.
