The essentials

What is Oral Sensory-Motor?

Oral Sensory-Motor Therapy addresses the awareness, sensitivity, strength, and coordination of the oral musculature — the tongue, lips, jaw, and cheeks — that underpin both safe eating and clear speech. Unlike non-evidence-based 'blowing exercises', DCCD's approach uses validated protocols (Oral Placement Therapy, Beckman) and is always tied to a real functional goal: improving mealtime safety, reducing drooling, or achieving clearer articulation. Every technique is purposeful.

Who benefits

  • Drooling beyond toddlerhood
  • Unclear or slurred speech due to oral motor weakness
  • Oral hypersensitivity (gagging at textures, teeth-brushing refusal)
  • Oral hyposensitivity (constant mouthing, difficulty chewing)
  • Difficulty managing mixed or lumpy food textures
  • Children with cerebral palsy affecting oral function
  • Post-surgical oral motor rehabilitation
How we work

Our approach

Evidence-based methods selected and combined specifically for each child's profile — never a one-size-fits-all programme.

Oral Placement Therapy (OPT) — Levels 1 & 2

Talk Tools-certified approach using placement tools to provide direct tactile-kinesthetic input to oral structures for speech and feeding goals.

Beckman Oral Motor Protocol

Passive and active stretch techniques to improve oral muscle range, strength, and endurance. Evidence-based and widely used internationally.

SOS Approach Integration

Oral sensory work embedded within the SOS Approach hierarchy for children with sensory-based oral aversions.

PROMPT (Motor Speech)

For children where oral motor difficulties affect speech production, PROMPT provides tactile cueing at the jaw, lips, and tongue for improved motor planning.

What to expect

Oral Sensory-Motor sessions are 40 minutes and typically run alongside speech or feeding therapy. The therapist assesses oral structure and function first, then uses a combination of placement tools, sensory inputs, and functional activities. Home programmes are provided with clear written instructions and tools so parents can do brief daily practice between sessions — consistency at home is where the biggest gains happen.
