What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a group of disorders affecting movement, balance, and posture caused by a brain injury or abnormality that occurs before, during, or shortly after birth. CP is the most common physical disability in children. The impact on speech and feeding is significant — many children with CP have dysarthria (motor speech disorder) and/or dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) that require specialist SLP and OT intervention.

Signs to Watch For

  • Low or high muscle tone (floppy or stiff limbs)
  • Delayed motor milestones (rolling, sitting, walking)
  • Asymmetric use of arms and legs
  • Difficulty with oral feeding from birth
  • Unclear or unintelligible speech
  • Drooling beyond typical developmental age
  • Difficulty with fine motor tasks (drawing, writing, self-care)
  • Coordination and balance challenges

How DCCD Helps

At DCCD, children with CP receive coordinated SLP and OT intervention. Our SLPs address motor speech (dysarthria), AAC for non-speaking children, and swallowing safety. Our OTs work on fine motor skills, positioning, and sensory needs. We collaborate closely with the child's neurologist and physiotherapist to ensure a fully integrated care approach.
