What is Dev. Delay?
A developmental delay occurs when a child is significantly behind their peers in one or more areas: gross motor, fine motor, speech and language, cognitive, or social-emotional development. 'Global developmental delay' refers to delays across two or more areas. Delays can be caused by genetic conditions, prematurity, medical complications, or may have no identifiable cause — but in all cases, early intervention produces the best outcomes.
Signs to Watch For
- Not sitting independently by 9 months
- Not walking by 18 months
- Not using words by 18 months
- Difficulty with age-appropriate self-care (feeding, dressing)
- Struggling to follow simple instructions
- Limited play skills compared to same-age peers
- School-related concerns about learning or attention
- Falling behind on multiple milestone areas simultaneously
How DCCD Helps
DCCD's multidisciplinary team is uniquely suited to address global developmental delay because we bring SLPs, OTs, and behaviour specialists under one roof. Following a comprehensive assessment, we build an integrated intervention plan that targets all areas of delay simultaneously — reducing the burden on families and ensuring each therapist's work supports the others. Parent coaching ensures progress continues at home.
