What is Feeding?

Pediatric feeding disorders affect a child's ability or willingness to eat, impacting nutrition, growth, and family wellbeing. They can stem from sensory sensitivities, oral motor difficulties, medical history (reflux, tube feeding), anxiety, or a combination. Feeding disorders are often misunderstood as 'fussy eating' — but for many children, mealtimes are genuinely distressing and require specialist support.

Signs to Watch For

  • Accepting fewer than 20 foods
  • Gagging or vomiting at the sight, smell, or texture of foods
  • Extreme food selectivity (only specific brands, colours, or shapes)
  • Mealtime lasting more than 30 minutes
  • Falling off the growth chart or poor weight gain
  • Difficulty transitioning from bottle/breast to solids
  • History of tube feeding or NICU admission
  • Avoiding entire food groups or textures

How DCCD Helps

DCCD is one of India's few centres offering the SOS Approach to Feeding and COSMI — two of the world's most evidence-based feeding therapy frameworks. Our feeding therapists address the sensory, oral motor, behavioural, and physiological roots of feeding difficulties. We work with both the child and the family to reduce mealtime anxiety and systematically expand food acceptance at the child's own pace.
