What is Sensory?

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) occurs when the brain has difficulty receiving and responding to information from the senses. A child with SPD may be oversensitive (avoiding textures, sounds, or movement) or undersensitive (seeking intense sensory input like crashing, spinning, or deep pressure). SPD is particularly common in autistic children and those with ADHD, but also occurs on its own.

Signs to Watch For

  • Covering ears at ordinary sounds (hand dryers, crowds)
  • Avoiding messy play, certain textures, or clothing tags
  • Meltdowns in busy environments like malls or classrooms
  • Constantly seeking movement — jumping, spinning, crashing
  • Difficulty sitting still or focusing at school
  • Poor coordination or 'clumsiness'
  • Difficulty tolerating haircuts, nail cutting, or teeth brushing
  • Seeming unaware of pain or temperature

How DCCD Helps

Our Occupational Therapists use Sensory Integration (SI) therapy — the gold standard approach for SPD. SI therapy uses a specially equipped sensory gym to provide the child with precisely targeted sensory experiences, helping the nervous system organise and respond more adaptively. We also create individualised 'sensory diets' — daily sensory activity plans that parents implement at home.
